Train the Trainer Workshop
The workshop contains two parts: the learning process and the teaching process.
The Learning Process
This part of the workshop focuses on understanding how people learn. Participants will be
introduced to current theories of learning from the area of educational psychology. The
knowledge learned will help instructors to create a lecture or training session in order to
increase understanding and retention of the material.
• The Self-Concept - looks at the inseparable connection between experience and
learning and how both shape a personʼs identity.
• The Learning Principles - looks at the principles that have a direct influence on
the effectiveness of learning. This section focuses on how an individual's
perception of external stimuli influences insight and motivation. This section
also looks into the factors that effect perception, and thus what we do
and donʼt learn.
• The Learning Cycle - delves into the cyclical process of learning by focusing
on two aspects. First, the different depths of learning, and second, the
different learning styles of people
• Retention - looks at how memory works; what
forgetting actually is; and how to increase
retention of material
The Teaching Process
This second part of the workshop focuses specifically on the process of teaching. The aim
is to give participants a clear, concise and concrete way of teaching. This part takes the
theory presented in the first part and translates it into practical tools. Participants can
focus on doing the teaching and less of the how to do the teaching.
• Principles of Teaching - looks at the 5-key principals that instructors should build into
their lectures or training sessions.
• The Lecture Outline - participants receive a step-by-step template of how to organize,
structure and build a teaching session or lecture, taking into account material learned in the first part of the workshop.
• Suggestive Teaching - teaches how to design specific questions that address the
different depths of learning (from Part I - The Learning Cycle)
